Please keep in mind that these discounts change. For up-to-date information, check with a librarian or the publisher. This information was last reviewed in February 2021.
Some publishers have special programs that allow authors to pay discounted APCs (article processing charges) when they publish open access. These programs tend to rely on the Caltech Library having a subscription to a publisher's resource. APCs range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on publisher.
As of 2020 these are the discounts that are available:
|American Chemical Society (ACS)||
For Open Access Hybrid Journals, all Caltech authors are entitled to "Subscribing Institution Pricing" because the Caltech Library subscribes to the entire package of ACS journals. Individuals who are also ACS Members qualify for additional discounts when publishing in OA Hybrid Journals.
For publishing in Fully Open Access journals (Central Science, Omega, and the Gold/Au Journals) discounts are available only for authors who are individual ACS Members. No additional institutional discount is available.
For additional information, please see ACS Open Access Pricing.
UNLIMITED Article Credits for authors from subscribing institutions, enabling affiliated authors to publish their articles as Open Access (OA) in ECS journals free of charge.
For additional information, please see ECS Digital Library Partners.
MDPI "membership" gives authors a 10% discount on APCs but without any involvement from the library. MDPI will notify authors that they are eligible for the APC discount when they submit.
For additional information, please see MDPI Institutional Open Access Program.
|Nucleic Acids Research||
NAR is fully Open Access. Caltech authors receive a 50% discount on OA charges based on the Caltech Library paying for an institutional membership. In 2021 this was $1900 instead of $3800.
For additional information, please see NAR's Open Access Initiative.
|National Academy of Science||
Caltech authors publishing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) receive an Open Access APC discount based on the Caltech Library's payment for a site license for access. As of February 2021, this is a payment of $1300 instead of $1700.
For more information see PNAS Fees and Licenses.
Members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) may receive an additional 4% discount. No other discounts are available.
For more information see Science Advances Licensing and Charges.
Authors who are either (1) members of SPIE OR (2) who work at an institution that subscribes to the SPIE Digital Library receive a 25% discount off of OA APC fees. Caltech Library is a subscriber to the Digital Library, so all Caltech authors will receive this discount. Note that the subscription discount cannot combine with the member discount. As of 2021 this means paying $1255 instead of $1655 on most articles.
For more information, see SPIE Journals OA.
