According to the Faculty Board, Caltech defines plagiarism in two ways: (Officers of the Faculty, Plagiarism Panel, Apr 09, 2018; login reqd):

(1) Plagiarism Definition for Researchers

The Caltech Policy on Research Misconduct (p. 4) defines plagiarism as follows:

Plagiarism is the appropriation of another person’s ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit

This definition is identical to the regulatory definition for NIH and NSF.

(2) Plagiarism Definitions for Students

  • The Undergraduate Honor Code Handbook (p. 6) uses the same definition as above and offers guidelines about plagiarism (p.2)
  • The Graduate Honor Code Description online (also p. 36 of handbook) specifies that plagiarism is an honor code violation, but does not define it. A recent graduate honor council presentation to students defines plagiarism as “using other people’s words as your own.”
