iThenticate -- a product of the commercial firm Turnitin LLC -- is a powerful online tool for determining the originality of a text document. iThenticate compares a submitted text against millions of documents in its database. It generates a Similarity Report that summarizes the percent of overlapping content; highlights areas in the submitted manuscript that appear in other published or online documents; and it provides links to the source documents that contain the overlapping text.
Some funding agencies and publishers use iThenticate in their review workflows to evaluate the originality of submitted proposals and manuscripts. Some universities license Ithenticate for their campus authors to use as a self-check on manuscript quality before submission time.
Caltech has been evaluating iThenticate for campus use and the Library will be sure to notify users should the service become available.
